At Sal Surfing school we love teaching folks at all levels about Stand-up Paddleboarding. Whether you’re a beginner – never touched a board before, or if you’ve done a bit, or a bit more, we will help you get better. Our objective is to supply you with all the basic skills you will need to safely paddle and stand on the board. After the class you will have all the necessary skills topaddle-board with confidence and safety, keeping your balance and being able to safely return back to the start point.
Stand up paddleboarding dates back hundreds of years ago to the ancient Polynesians who, using a paddle to navigate through the water, would stand up to improve their visibility. In the early 1960s, the native Beach Boys of Hawaii would stand on their long boards, using canoe oars to paddle out to take pictures of surfers.
With paddle-boarding you will be surprised how quickly you progress, mastering the basics in a weekend, in the process you will be strengthening your whole body, your inner core muscles, legs and loosing weight much more than any other sport, so from a health perspective it is very beneficial.
There have been some cases where people have said they developed a 6 pack after only 6 weeks of paddle-boarding, that can't be bad can it?
SUP is suitable for adults of all ages, as SUP is not as stressful on the knees as surfing it is espcially popular amongst those who can no longer withstand the rigours of surfing or windsurfing. If you've never tried SUP then at Sal Surfing school we will provide you with everything you need to know about SUP with our vast amount of experience to get you going straight away. Warning! Whatever your background be aware you could become addicted from the first class.
Boards: SUP boards are different in shape from a surf board, sizes are based on the person’s weight and experience. Novice paddlers should choose wider, flatter boards, which offer more stability.
Paddles: SUP paddles have an angle or “elbow” in the shaft for maximum efficiency. A paddle should be roughly 6″ to 8″ taller than you are. If you want to SUP in Portugal we have really reasonable hire rates if you don’t have your own gear.
Never leave your board at any time. If you loose your paddle you can use your hands easier than swimming. Wind can also blow the board and paddle away faster than you can swim. Always use your ankle leash to secure the board to you.
Be aware of other swimmers or surfers in the water, keep your distance at all times for your safety and theirs.
