  • Origins

Stand up paddleboarding dates back hundreds of years ago to the ancient Polynesians who, using a paddle to navigate through the water, would stand up to improve their visibility. In the early 1960s, the native Beach Boys of Hawaii would stand on their long boards, using canoe oars to paddle out to take pictures of surfers.

  • Health Benefits

With paddle-boarding you will be surprised how quickly you progress, mastering the basics in a weekend, in the process you will be strengthening your whole body, your inner core muscles, legs and loosing weight much more than any other sport, so from a health perspective it is very beneficial.

There have been some cases where people have said they developed a 6 pack after only 6 weeks of paddle-boarding, that can't be bad can it?

  • SUP EQUIPMENT

  • Boards:  SUP boards are different in shape from a surf board, sizes are based on the person’s weight and experience.  Novice paddlers should choose wider, flatter boards, which offer more stability.

Paddles: SUP paddles have an angle or “elbow” in the shaft for maximum efficiency. A paddle should be roughly 6″ to 8″ taller than you are.   If you want to SUP in Portugal we have really reasonable hire rates if you don’t have your own gear.

  • Safety in the water

  • Never leave your board at any time.  If you loose your paddle you can use your hands easier than swimming.  Wind can also blow the board and paddle away faster than you can swim.  Always use your ankle leash to secure the board to you.

Be aware of other swimmers or surfers in the water, keep your distance at all times for your safety and theirs.
